Introduction to WeBL:
This course should be considered a basic introduction to give you an idea of what the game is all about. It should NOT be taken as a subsitute for some of the basic help files provided by the game.
WeBL is a game that simulates managing a boxing gym. You will create/pickup fighters to fight under you gym, and manage their careers. They will fight once a week against random opponents with similar career records and rankings, and as they win they will move up. The fights are decided on a combination of your fighters statistics (Athletic Points, or APs), and the fight plan you tell your fighter to use for that specific fight.
Creating fighters is the easiest way to get a fighter for your gym. It is done easily under the "create fighter thread". Here you will give your fighter a name, and assign his initial statistics (you will have 70 AP's to distribute as you please). There is a button that will randomly assign the AP's, but that is never a good idea to use. The basics of fighter creation will be covered in another course.
Your fighter will fight in a "region" against other fighters of the same weight class. Most fighters will start out in your public region (which will be assigned to you based on where you live geographically). There are also special regions which fight under different rules, such as BareKnuckles or Amateur Style. The exact specifications for each region are found under the help files. There is another region known as "contenders".
If your fighter works the way up through his public (geographic) region to the top and wins it's "regional title" twice, he will be promoted to "Contenders" where he may work his way to the top and the "World Title" for his weight division. While this is the ultimate goal of any WeBL player, there are only 13 world titles to be had, and thousands of good gyms. It can take up to a year to manage a fighter to WT levels. Gyms should not be discouraged, most gyms will never win a world title and should simply strive to being the best player they can.
A large part of the game is participating in the community of players. There are three places to do so. First is the "forums", a series of bulliten boards about the game. This is a good place to hang out and talk to other players. Each fighter also has the option of issuing "press releases" in his region. This is the place to talk smack and hype up your fighter. Although most gyms will be polite, do not be surprised if people don't take your press releases seriously until you begin to win some fights. The third is the chat room. This is unofficial, so it is not subject to the same monitors as the forums and presses are, but you should still be polite.
Your fighters will win money for winning or drawing their fights. This money doesn't do anything, it is simply a way of keeping score. The amount of money you win will go up as your fighter wins more fights. He will win $0 for his first fight, $20 if he wins the next one, $320 if he wins the third, and so on. The exact formula can be found on the help pages.
The main goals of your gym should be the following:
1) To win fights for your gym
2) To advance your fighters in the rankings
3) To win money
4) To win titles
5) To interact with other gyms
6) To have fun!
Be patient, and WeBL will eventually yield all of these to you. Good luck, and thank you for taking this course.
